Yes, yes, and yes again. As a freelance writer, writing isn’t just what I love, it’s how I earn my living. To do that, you have to think like an entrepreneur. If you want to make money for writing, it’s about so much more than the beautiful, creative act of putting words to paper.
You need to learn about dealing with clients, marketing, managing finances, raising invoices, managing expectations, applying for work, and so much more! For many writers, those areas are outside their comfort zone, but the reality is if you want to make a sustainable living from writing (and you absolutely should), it’s something we must all learn.
We like to think that the beauty and power of our words alone will make us successful. If only that were the case. Instead, we need to give them a helping hand by understanding they need to be launched into the world in the right way.
Build up a solid framework around the words, do the “boring” entrepreneurial stuff, and you’re about a hundred times more likely to succeed.
