That initial filter of saying “no” is where it all starts, but you have to say no with both conviction and compassion. Don’t falter in your resolve, but be gentle in your refusal — it’s the only way to stay sane!
I also think technology can be a big help here — any commitments and promises get added to my “To Do” list, and they don’t get checked off until they are done! If I can’t do it right away, it’s then just a quick message to keep people informed.
Sure, sometimes circumstances prevent us from meting our promises, but most of the time we can work around that and honor the things we’ve said in the way we act. That helps us build integrity, creates trust, and ultimately helps us lead a more fulfilling live for ourselves and others.
